Toronto Globe And Mail Interview: Madeleine Peyroux wants to put hiatus behind her
The last time Peyroux played Toronto, she appeared at a small downtown club. Tomorrow, the jazzy, bluesy, 32-year-old chanteuse who sounds far more like Billie Holiday than Jones, is taking the stage at a far more prestigious venue: Massey Hall. In a recent interview, Peyroux - she's now based in Brooklyn, N.Y., after living many years abroad - said she enjoys touring the United States more than she once did. "In a way, American audiences are more challenging than European. I'm playing American music back to Americans. They don't generally have the same passion for it, but it's beautiful and because of the social content, there's a potentially deeper understanding."

sj-r.com Article: Emotion takes Peyroux's jazz to a deeper level
sj-r.com Article: In an age when the fluffiest pop acts boast of penning their own songs, jazz chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux may be a bit of an anomaly.
While Peyroux tried her hand at songwriting for the first time on her latest album, "Half of a Perfect World," the thirtysomething singer doesn't feel the need to attach a "songwriter" suffix in order to be taken seriously as an artist.

Nashville Scene Article: Madeleine Peyroux may just be the next great vocal interpreter of our time
Nashville Scene Article: ... If anything, "River" hints that as good as Peyroux sounds on the rest of Half the Perfect World, she's capable of even more. If Peyroux, only 33, continues to grow as she has through her first three albums, she shows the potential to develop into one of the premiere vocal interpreters of her time.

NPR Interview: Madeleine Peyroux's Nearly 'Perfect World'
Anytime Madeleine Peyroux sings, her music sounds a little different. The Georgia-born Peyroux (her last name is pronounced like the country Peru) became famous, in part, for putting her idiosyncratic touch on time-tested standards. Many have compared her voice to Billie Holliday's.

London Concert Review: A singer on Holiday
The Evening Standard Article: Madeleine Peyroux may sound superficially like a cosy jazz chanteuse, but fans have been warned repeatedly that there is a temperamental artiste lurking beneath that unglamorous exterior.
Anyone here who had read her recent press would be forgiven for expecting her either to storm off early or start breathing fire.
However, there was no evidence of volatility just over a year after her last visit to the Barbican. A casual smile, a tapping of the toe, and she was off, entirely immersed in her songs.

Edinburgh Concert Review: ...a better slice of laid-back jazz you'd be hard pressed to find
Scotsman.com Article: French-American jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux has been much talked about of late, mostly by people comparing her voice to that of the great Billie Holliday, and as a result her albums have been selling like proverbial hot cakes. She was in Edinburgh in support of her latest offering, Half the Perfect World, and a better slice of laid-back jazz you'd be hard pressed to find to listen to on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Chicago Concert Review: Madeleine Peyroux put her signature on love songs
MetroMix.com Article: A good interpreter's job is more complicated than it may seem. First, she must have the taste and sensitivity to recognize suitable material. Second, she must have a hint of arrogance to think she can do better, or at least differently, but also enough humbleness to temper those instincts. Then, if she's done her job right, she'll disguise all that hard work and make you forget the original ever existed.
Madeleine Peyroux isn't quite up to that level yet, but at the Vic Saturday night she proved she's well on her way. Unlike the milquetoast crossover jazz singers that clutter the charts with standards and holiday tunes, Peyroux is able to translate each perfect turn of phrase of her well-chosen selections into her particular idiom (lightly swinging WW II-vintage backroom blues) without playing the wounded, haunted chanteuse.

Minneapolis Concert Review: Peyroux not perfect but shows rare gift
Star-Tribune Article: Peyroux firmly demonstrated in her 90-minute performance that her voice is nonetheless a graceful, rare instrument that's not so easily copied. Even a song as simple as "Smile" sounded untouchable when led by her.

Los Angeles Concert Review: Peyroux's stylistic jigsaw of styles
Los Angeles Times Article: Neither comparison - to Jones or Holiday - is exactly on target. Peyroux, in fact, seems to have a jigsaw musical personality. When she arrived onstage at Royce, guitar in hand, wearing a long, plain dress, she had the look of a '60s folkie.

Oakland Concert Review: It's the real thing -- no longer a careless love for Peyroux

Minneapolis Concert Preview: Peyroux's purr-fection
Star Tribune Article: Madeleine Peyroux has gone from busker on the Paris streets to a best-selling chanteuse.
It was daunting enough for jazz-cafe crooner Madeleine Peyroux to do a duet with chanteuse extraordinaire k.d. lang. Adding to the challenge was that they were recording a Joni Mitchell song with Larry Klein, who used to be Mitchell's husband, producer and bass player.

Time Article: Finding Her Voice, Madeleine Peyroux has proved she can nail jazz classics. Now she's tackling a modern sound. By William Boston in Berlin.
In the crowded corner of a Berlin bookstore, Madeleine Peyroux, with her acoustic guitar slung across her shoulders, seems a bit lost. Dressed in faded jeans and a white peasant blouse, she looks more like the forlorn street singer in Paris, where she spent her youth, than a woman whose last record sold more than a million copies and has concert halls booked around the world to promote a new one. "This is the worst part," she says. "This in-between time when the work is done, but the record isn't really out yet and you don't know if people will like it."

Seattle Concert Review: Madeleine Peyroux delivers subtle, elegant show at the Moore
Concert Review: Madeleine Peyroux's music is an exploration in volume but not in the direction of loud, louder, loudest. No, the Georgia-born jazz singer takes it the other way: quiet, quieter, quietest.
Friday night at the Moore, the bulk of her set was a subtle and somnolent affair drawing mostly from her recently released "Half the Perfect World." Lyrically, Peyroux's melancholy coos wander around like lost love letters or those never sent. And whether it an original tune or one she interprets, nature (rain in particular) is a common reference. From the "I'm going where the sun keeps shining through the pouring rain" of "Everybody's Talking" to Chaplin's "Smile" with the lilting inspiration.
